Welcome To UJUG Website

The Utah Java User Group is a non-profit organization primarily concerned with helping all of the Java developers in our community keep our skills sharp and knowledge current. There's no better place for Java developers in Utah to socialize, network, and learn about what's happening in the Java universe.

We meet the third Thursday of each month (except December). Our meeting agenda includes two technical presentations, various break-out sessions, book giveaways, and (perhaps the biggest draw) free food during the meeting. Bring your Java questions to the meeting and you'll probably find an answer!

Visit our sponsors. We do not collect dues or fees, so without them we wouldn't have a group. This includes our meeting place, food, books, drinks, our web site and everything else. Please take the time to visit our sponsor's web sites and support them.

We're always looking to improve our group. Send your comments, suggestions and whatever to Chris Maki This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Consider joining the announcements email list. This list is only used to send mail regarding the upcoming meetings, and is low-volume. To sign-up to our jobs email list, check out this page.

The FamilySearch Digital Pipeline

Presented by David Huntbach, Rex Hatch and Rob Edwards of the LDS Church

David Huntbach was born three days after Sputnik was launched. Being born under a new star of sorts he wanted to be an astronaut like every other Beaver Cleaver kid in the early sixties. Glasses in third grade put an end to those aspirations so from that time until he went to college David vacillated between becoming a Mississippi River barge pilot and a rock musician. One day in college he discovered what was going on in the math building where all the nerdy, myopic people hung out. They were writing FORTRAN! His destiny and passion for software started with that first “$JOB” card.

David's professional interests and experiences have been in the areas of computer aided instruction, compiler tools, embedded systems, e-mail gateways, database applications, and distributed/clustered systems.

Currently, David is making his passions for his job, family, and a handful of recreational pursuits like water sports, radio controlled airplanes, and sports cars fit within a twenty-four hour day.

David holds a 1984 B.S. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University, a US patent (#5794232), and was a Novell employee of the year in 1994.

Presentation Overview

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints has a great interest in helping people find their ancestors.  As a result, the Church has a significant world-wide effort aimed at preserving historical records.  For many years this involved taking pictures and preserving them on microfilm which resulted in the Granite Mountain Records Vault (GMRV) housing 2.5 million rolls of microfilm.  This provides good preservation of the information, but it is difficult to make the information available globally.

In recent years an effort has been undertaken to make this information more available to Church members and the general public.  This has resulted in switching the original document capture from microfilm to digital images.  Additionally, the Church is converting the microfilm in GMRV to digital format.  Consequently, there is a need to store and preserve pedabytes of data.  Additionally, these images must be made available to a large number of people, world-wide, who are interested in doing research on their family history.

The presentation will describe the various processes involved in capturing, processing, and distributing this massive amount of data.  There will be detailed discussion on the project that is underway to transcribe the handwritten data from the images, involving over 130,000 volunteers.  There will also be a presentation on the project that allows average people to quickly find textual information and associated images relating to their ancestors.  Both of these projects handle large amounts of data and are being built to scale to a large number of end users.
  1. Summary of the our goals and the problems we are dealing with
  2. Overview of the pipeline architecture -- where we are, where we want to be
  3. Detailed look at one or two areas already deployed (e.g., ScanStone, Indexing, Record Search, tDPC, iDIS)
  4. Sneak peek at the DPC2 and Digital Archive projects
  5. Q & A
