Java Technology Stack

Have you every wondered how Java technologies are used at Overstock.com, or how the world's largest J2EE (no that's not a typo, these guys were J2EE technology pioneers) application built by Williams Energy is being transformed right now to use Java and Flex?  How about how O.C. Tanner, the world leader in employee recognition and the manufacture of the 2002 Olympic medals, uses Java technology?  If you attended last months meeting you know just how complex the FamilySearch Digital Pipeline is, but how about the rest of the applications and systems built by the LDS Church? Finally, IHC, host of the UJUG monthly meeting, will be talking about how Java enables them to build complex Java systems.

This months UJUG meeting will be broken into two sections, first a technology stack overview by Overstock.com, Williams Energy, O.C. Tanner, the LDS Church, and IHC followed by a panel discussion.

To give you a better idea of what will be covered during the technology stack overview, each presenter will talk about:
  1. Challenges your company faced and how they were resolved with your technology stack
  2. Overview of your technology stack
  3. Once you decided on the stack, what worked and what didn’t?
  4. What would you change if you could?
The panel discussion will cover the following topics:
  1. Does the platform you’ve selected drive additional technology choices?  e.g. if you are using GlassFish does that mean you also use the Metro stack for web services?
  2. What is your biggest pain point today and how are you addressing it?
  3. Two part question on how your stack effects things:
    1. How does your technology stack choices affect hiring?
    2. Do you expect everyone hired to  know the whole stack or just the experts?
