Welcome To UJUG Website

The Utah Java User Group is a non-profit organization primarily concerned with helping all of the Java developers in our community keep our skills sharp and knowledge current. There's no better place for Java developers in Utah to socialize, network, and learn about what's happening in the Java universe.

We meet the third Thursday of each month (except December). Our meeting agenda includes two technical presentations, various break-out sessions, book giveaways, and (perhaps the biggest draw) free food during the meeting. Bring your Java questions to the meeting and you'll probably find an answer!

Visit our sponsors. We do not collect dues or fees, so without them we wouldn't have a group. This includes our meeting place, food, books, drinks, our web site and everything else. Please take the time to visit our sponsor's web sites and support them.

We're always looking to improve our group. Send your comments, suggestions and whatever to Chris Maki This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Consider joining the announcements email list. This list is only used to send mail regarding the upcoming meetings, and is low-volume. To sign-up to our jobs email list, check out this page.

If you are on Facebook, join us on the at the UJUG Facebook group. We also have a LinkedIn group, you can join it here.

Abstract

Wicket: Web development the Java way

Wicket is the web framework for developers who like to write and maintain Java code, instead of XML, EL, etc. This presentation will show the simplicity of the Wicket programming model and how it makes use of core Java concepts such as inheritance, unlike other so-called Java web frameworks. The presentation will also show how Wicket’s clean separation of concerns leads to mockup re-use and/or easier collaboration with a web designer.

About the speaker

Chris Hansen is a Senior Software Developer at Overstock.com, co-author of the open source Pojomatic library, and a Scala & Wicket enthusiast. He is currently leading the java.community.events UJUG breakout session, and has been an active member of the UJUG community for over a year.

Abstract

.

Many development shops have made the leap from RCS, Perforce, ClearCase, PVCS, CVS, BitKeeper or SourceSafe to the modern Subversion (SVN) version control system. But why not take the next massive stride in productivity and get on board with Git, a distributed version control system (DVCS). Jump ahead of the masses staying on Subversion, and increase your team's productivity, debugging effectiveness, flexibility in cutting releases, and repository redundancy at $0 cost. Understand how distributed version control systems are game-changers and pick up the lingo that will become standard in the next few years.
In this talk, we discuss the team changes that liberate you from the central server, but still conform to the corporate expectation that there's a central master repository. You'll get a cheat sheet for Git, and a trail-map from someone who's actually experienced the Subversion to Git transition.
Lastly, we'll even expose how you can leverage 75% of Git's features against a Subversion repository without ever telling your bosses you are using it. Be forewarned that they may start to wonder why you are so much more effective in your checkins than other members of your team.
